Ghost Stories

I will be giving a talk on local ghost stories, at the Michigan Ave. branch of the Ypsilanti District Library, on Thursday, October 20, 2005, at 7:00 P. M.. Now all I need to do, is find enough local ghost stories to fill a 45 minute talk. I know about a few places that are said to be hunted, such as the Cross Street Firehouse, but I am going to need more. I have wanted to research local ghost stories for some time, and now a have a reason to do so. Do you know about a place in Ypsilanti that is said to be hunted? Care to share the story with me? Please tell me.

My wife and I purchased a house in Ypsilanti, Mi back in 1983. It was an old home and after doing a lot of research we found out that it was part of the underground railroad. Many strange things happened in that house, but only to me for the most part. There was an apartment in the rear main floor and the rest of the house we lived in. I worked midnights at my job and came home one morning to go to sleep. I was in our kitchen in the front of the house and then went upstairs to the back of the house. Realizing I left something downstairs, I went back down and went by the kitchen, and the water was running. No one else was home! It was really weird but it didn't bother me until I went back upstairs and went into the bathroom and the water was on in there also! I hadn't even been in the bathroom upstairs. I was freaked. Anyway, one time I was walking up the front stairway, and very clearly I heard a woman's voice say "hello...Hello" I ran back downstairs and out the front door and looked all around the house and I saw no one! During the time we owned the house, we had to excavate the sewer drain to the street to repair it. The company we hired started digging in the wrong direction and discovered an underground room in the yard! it looked like a brick igloo and someone explained it off as a septic tank, but the mortar on the inside of the "room" was bright white and I felt that it would have been stained if it were a septic. Anyway, we talked to the local historian, and he said that it was probably a holding room for slaves! We also found a footmarker from a grave in the backyard that had the initials "C.A.H." on it. We tried to find out if anyone lived in the house with those initials but we couldn't find anyone. Most of our friends and family later told us (after we moved out), that they really felt uncomfortable in the house like someone was watching them! The last really big thing that happened one night at about 2;30 in the morning. Everyone in the house was awakened by a very loud explosion that rattled the whole house. Our tenant in the apt. called us on the phone to find out if we heard it and we were really scared, thinking that something in the basement had blew up. I got some clothes on and went to the basement, and found................................absolutely nothing wrong! I went outside , looked around , checked the whole house over and couldn't find anything or any explanation for the noise. The next day, I went up and down the street knocking on neighbors doors and asking if anyone heard the explosion. No one heard a thing and to this day we have no explanation as to the origin of the sound! I even called the National weather Service office at the local airport to see if there were any storms during the night but they said no. Anyway, that's my haunted house story, so enjoy! Ypsilanti - Ladies' Library - This historic structure was once the home of the Starkweather family, but was donated to the city by Maryanne Starkweather upon her death, to be used as a library. It was renovated for office space about 15 years ago. Many claim to have seen Maryanne in the upper halls of building, or have hear footsteps above them when working after hours - long after the building was closed up for the day. The igloo in the previous story is most likely a cistern. There are thousands around, fun to dig up.

Ypsilanti - just off Denton road - At night you an drive down this road and see weird blue lights flashing all over the whole road. the more noise you make the more lights come out. And if you get out of the car or turn off the engine you can hear metal chains or pipes grinding and also hear groans and growls.

Ypsilanti - Geddes RD. - supposedly if you are driving down the road late at night you may see a woman in a nurses uniform walking along the edge of the road.? But after you get past her she disappears from your rearview mirror.? The story is she was walking to work at the V.A hospital and was murdered by a man that left her for dead on the side of the road.

Ypsilanti - Geddes and LeForge - The site of the Michigan murders. Back in the late 60's early 70's there were several murders that took the lives of several students of Eastern Michigan and the University of Michigan. At this site there was a farmhouse that was the site of one of the murders. The murderer is curently serving time in Marquette Prison and rumored to be up for parol soon. It is said that if you drive down this road your trunk will pop open and you can still see the silo of the farm house which is said to be haunted by the ghost of the girl that was murdered there.

The silo is gone near Leforge and Geddes. To make way for the Mazda(?) parts plant. So maybe the factory workers will notice things

READERS TALES

The Ghosts of Willow Run

I work at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Approximately 3 years ago, I was filing paperwork in the closet (that's where we kept our filing cabinets) on the second floor of one of the "newer" buildings out there.

I heard a voice call my name. Thinking it was one of my co-workers, I went back to the outer office who see who needed me. My co-workers insisted that nobody had called me. I went back into the closet, and again heard someone call my name. I went back to the outer office again, and got the same answer. Nobody had called me.

This happened to me on a dozen separate occasions over a period of about six months. All of my co-workers insisted that none of them were playing a joke, and all expressed concern for my mental well-being. It became the office joke.

After my department moved out of that area, one of my co-workers went to ask the new occupants of that area if they ever heard "voices." The answer was "No." I chalked it up to either too much stress at that time, or my co-workers playing a prank and not wanting to come clean. Recently, however, I've changed my mind.

Last week, I was in the bathroom on the second floor in the main hangar building. There had been some remodeling done out there and at 10:30 PM, my coworker and myself were the only ones on the second floor. I distinctly heard someone crying in the bathroom stall next to mine (there are only two stalls in that bathroom.)

I said, "Are you okay?" and the crying stopped. I looked in the next stall - there was nobody there! The crying wasn't faint or "ghostly" - it was very distinct. And then, it started again. I got goose bumps and the hairs on my arms and the back of my neck were standing straight up. Needless to say, I left the bathroom as quickly as I could!

I will admit to being very shaken by the experience. After I calmed down, I went back to that bathroom and heard nothing. In fact, I haven't heard anything since that night...

-Unsigned-

(NOTE: The author sent me an interesting footnote to this tale..."at the time I was hearing my name called, I had told my mother about it and she suggested it could be my great grandmother. Great Grandma worked out here at Willow Run during WWII building bombers.")

Ypsilanti - Denton Road Bridge - The story goes that a group of kids were playing chicken near Denton Road bridge, and one of them proved to be chicken. His car swerved off the road when they reached the bridge, and crashed into the river below. Many people claim to see a light come out of river and chase their vehicle to the end of the road, if they stop at the center of the bridge at night.

The local history states that, in the late 1800's, a man came home drunk and found his wife with another man. In a drunken jealous rage, the husband killed the man. The wife took their son and hid under the bridge. After the husband disposed of the lover's body, he went looking for his cheating wife. He found her and their son hiding under the Denton Road Bridge. He killed them both. No one knows where the husband disposed the bodies. He was never seen again. At the bridge, people have seen lights that seem to come from nowhere. The lights are supposed to represent the murdered souls of the victims or the lantern of the jealous husband.

I grew up in Ypsilanti, MI, and remember LeForge Rd and the Denton Rd. ghost stories. However, I have to say that the main reason why anyone's trunk might have popped open going down LaForge Rd. in the 80s is because that road was so horribly bumpy due to all the pot holes and patches, which made it feel like driving on cobblestone. :D
